Chapter 23
Sebastian
AS WE ENTERED THE DARKNESS, I pulled a box of matches out of my pocket and lit one up. The light was enough for us to walk down the staircase without me having to worry about Lila falling.
Not that it would have mattered. I would have caught her fall. I knew every inch, every step, of this place so well that I knew I could have walked it in my sleep.
Once we’d reached the bottom of the staircase, Lila took in the dark tunnel that stood before us.
“What is this place?” Her voice echoed, bouncing off the stone walls that surrounded us.
“What do you think it is?” I tested her.
She met my eyes, her green irises gleaming in the dim lighting. “It looks like a secret passage.”
I smiled. “That’s because it is.”
“Why is there a secret passage?” Lila asked.
“This secret passageway was built in the 1700s.
“The 1700s?” Her eyes grew big. “But this palace... it looks so modern. There’s no way it could have been so old.”
“The palace isn’t that old. It was only constructed in 1992. Prior to that, a castle stood in its place,” I explained. “This secret passageway is the only thing that remains of the original palace. My father insisted on leaving it here, because he felt it served a purpose.”
“Where does it lead to?”
“It leads to the Shore of Tranquility.”
She frowned. “What’s that?”
“It’s somewhat of a dead end,” I explained. “It’s a part of the beach you can only access from this passageway. It’s one of the only places in our entire kingdom where you won’t find any vampires.”
From the Shore of Tranquility, there was also a portal, but I knew I couldn’t tell her that. I’d already told her too much, more than I probably should have. I couldn’t tell her how to leave... and it wasn’t just because she wasn’t allowed to leave. It was because I was afraid she would.
I didn’t want to lose her.
It sounded ridiculous. I was Sebastian Stark. I didn’t care about girls. I didn’t care about humans. I didn’t care about my slaves, not beyond the means of taking care of them so they could comfortably serve their purpose.
But I had to remind myself she was none of those things. She wasn’t just a human girl or my slave. She was Lila DeHaven. She could try to deny it or skirt around it all she wanted, but I knew she was. And I was also convinced that was why I felt more for her than I’d ever felt for anyone.
“Why did you show this to me?” Lila asked.
Because I’m doing everything I can to gain your trust, I thought.
Well, that was partly it. There really was another reason.
“I fear that, eventually, someone else will figure out your true identity,” I explained. “I want to avoid that at any cost, because once it happens... if it happens... your life will be in grave danger.”
“Why would I be in danger?”
“As the prophecy goes—” I began to say, but she interrupted me.
